Many of us still not bold enough to tell our caste to others, whereas most of our known are aware of our castes. I am one among them, many times i keep mum on the issue of castes. there are 2 reasons behind this, 1; why to tell the caste to others and 2; i can know the ideas of other people towards our caste.

Why waste breath on freaks who have lost their former status because chamars are rising faster above them. We have done well and that is only the beginning. We are a thriving caste if you like better educated and intellectual . It is our leadership that has spearheaded the the rise of the dalit politically. We will be the rulers of India. I want every chamar to become a political animal and be inspired and think of raj. If Sh. Kanshi Ram can achieve so much imagine what we can achieve if we all work together. The problem with the jatts, from my experience of dealing with them as friends, is that they are often poorly educated on the subject and don’t know that quite a lot of the surnames in the Punjab cut across castes. Sandhu is another of those names. Ricky you need to get your facts right by doing research as to why this has happened. You are obviously as young man hothead and emotional and proud which is overbearing your mental faculties. For your benefit (according to the Vedas) under the old varna system persons from the same family were able to practise different type of jobs and trades.Later when Manu, the Hindu Law giver, came along he brought about the caste system, which was a rigid social structure, under which people practicing particular trades or jobs were forced to marry , work within that trade, which became hereditory jati. This is why caste names in Punjab for example cut across castes. If you do your research you will see the truth. India is crying out to the young people to eradicate this cancer which has infected the indians and given them a caste mindset. Without caste system( brahminism) india would va have been a much better country. I have a Jat friends who call themselves as ‘Jat Sikhs’. This is a contradiction in terms. You cannot be a Jat and also a sikh , because to call yourself a jat you are edorsing the caste system and by calling yourself as a sikh you are rejecting the caste system. Read what the Guru Granth Sahib and the Gurus say on the subject. You have to decide – are you a sikh or a hindu?. If you are urged to say jat again you are betraying the your religion and the Gurus who died for you. You and all your ‘Jatts’ should rise to the occasion and destroy castes considerations between the sikhs. This is what the Khalsa was all about. Waheguru will bless you for you you will be a true ‘spoot puttar’of sikh Gurus.

In addition to the above other reasons for names cutting across castes are:
1. India under brahminism was a close society. Ostracism from caste was a powerful tool for a number of reasons, for example breaching caste rules.Thus brahmins who performed ceremonies for shudras, were thrown out of caste into outcastes ie untouchables including chamars. Thus Kaul is a brahmin surname and also a chamar name. Another example is where there was intermarriage breaching marriage rule..Where this took place they were also outcasted and often sought refuge with the outcastes including chamars. The outcasted kept their gotras.
2. Political dynasty losing its raj were often thrown out en mass and outcasted. They also joined the ranks of chamars or other castes. Classical example the chauhans or chohans. This surname originally rajput but also falls into rajputs, jatts and also chamars. Many chamars were infact rajputs.
So when people have same surnames, that means they are related by blood (DNA). The males will share the same Y chromosone. In India you never marry a person with the same surname no matter how far down the line you may be related even if you are from different caste because the revulsion is too great. I have come across persons from different castes showing so much affection towards each other because they share the same surname. At that point they curse the brahmins for creating this wretched caste system.
I have heard and read some comments made by some jatts that the chamars are ‘moolighting’ jatt surnames so as to pass as jatts. This is absolute rubbish because they cannot be bothered to find out why they share some surnames. Chamars are very proud people and rightly so. We don’t need to do that and I don’t think there is single chamar out there who would do that. Would anybody out there would like to lose his or her family and adopt another I don’t think so. It shows the ignorance many young jatts who are devoid of knowledge. Chamars have bettered themselves so much in so many areas in the last 40 years in the Punjab so that they are not reliant on the Jatts for work or income. The rise of chamars is resented by the very people who oppressed us. Their resentment manifests in above like comments. The rise of dalits will continue until we take control of Delhi. Then truly we will have ‘captured the powerhouse for our emancipation’ (Dr BR Ambedkar) and fulfilled the dream of Guru Ravidass ‘esa chahon raj main’.

May I state that Sandhu, Sidhu, Sahota and Kalsi ARE Chamar surnames as well as Jatt/Tarkhan Surnames. Please educate yourself before asking people to get their “facts” right. I am a Sahota myself and I have Sandhu/Kalsi friends who ARE CHAMAR and no other caste!
Fact is… a surname does NOT determine a caste, its man-made BULLSHIT and has no place in society in this day and age.

I agree with you. All this caste names busines is total rubbish. It is promoting the caste system with all its ugliness. Caste system needs to be destroyed and replaced with humanitarianism. I think ravidassia needs to promote what ravidass wanted not its own agenda. Indians living in the west know how beautiful life is without caste. Those born, bred and educated in the west find that caste system is a disgusting and antithesis of human value of liberty, equality and fratenity. Well said and I agree with you. Guru Ravidass and all the other Gurus fought for the eradiaction of caste from Indian society and yet this website and many others too seem to be promoting the Brahminical caste system. How do they reconcile the two opposing ideas. Ravidassia should be working to promote the misssion of the Guru not actively engaged in doing the work of brahminism by encouraging the caste surnames. In the Uk mixed marriages are on the rise amonst Indians because the younsters do not like the caste system being imposed on them. I am a ravidassia sikh and in my own family there are girls and boys from different backgrounds and its beautiful. This has created abetter understanding between all concerned. What our elders could not achieve our children are doing and achieving because they have pure hearts. Sharing your roti and beti are the only way of eradicating the caste system. The ugly head of caste will do no good for anybody . It has created bad feelings and destroyed good relationships. The caste system has held back India for centuries untold. The brahmins had a good reason for promoting the caste system as they were the creaters and beneficieries of the system whilst caste system was imposed on the low castes to keep them low with the concepts of karma and kismet and reincarnation. The low castes are fools for following the caste system and dont realise they are slaves/victims of the system. Tell a ‘slave he is a slave and he will revolt’. Instead the slave in India is proud to be a slaves and activley promotes himself as a chamar, ragharia, jatt etc, who were all sudras. In the scheme of the caste system the shudras were the servants or slaves of the system.. All the leading great countries of the world that have progressed have had revolutions in their country by the the lower masses, eg Great Britain, France, Russia, China, America etc. And yet this has not happened in India , why? When will the Indian slaves revolt. The Brahmins have divided them into so many castes and sub castes that they do not get on with each other and dont unite and therefore do not pose a challeng to the Brahmincal rule or the system they have created. If you read the Brahmins religious books over and over they say keep saying keep the shudras oppressed. Manu in his ‘Laws of Manu’ clearly says these low castes must be kept divided and forced to do their ancesteral occupations otherwise they will destroy the system. The Gurus came to destroy the ugly caste system and install in its place a casteless society where all are equal, free and treat each others like brothers – the Khalsa. they were very educated and had read the religous scriptures of the Brahmins and they were unhappy about what they had read. They started a revolution to help the low castes to break away the shakles of the caste sytem. Did Guru ravidass not talk about ‘Begampura’ and dreamed of raj where every had food clothing and shelter and where all live together happily. I say to all Indians- wake up you are in the 21st century, get rid of backwardness.Imagine India without caste. Revolt Now!

I share your sentiments and agree with most of what you’ve said. But the above jatt lady had voted with her feet by marrying a chamar because she went for higher things than caste .ie love. Would you be prepared to give your daughter or allow your daughter to marry someone lower than your caste? She was very courageous and probably went against the wishes of her parents and the family.She as a result probably suffered mentally and emotionally a lot because of ostracism. So don’t call her ignorant. She has moved on but you are still stuck in the past and harbour toxic sentimentality. What has happened in the past or what is still happening is due to ignorance and lack of humanity and a failure of succesive Indian governments lacking the political will to eradicate caste . The root cause of all this was the system called brahminism (caste system created by the Brahmins). Every caste was busy oppressing the lower one. The jatts themselves were oppressed by the Rajputs. The jatts, hitherto 300 years, did not own land but had leased land as tenants and worked as peasant farmers.They often borrowed money from the lallas with extortionate interest rates and and also had to pay their landlord rent and share the crop ( n.b. Mother India!).We were all victims of the the caste system. We all now need to work to eradicate the system in its entirety. We all need to transcend caste and imbibe humanism, which is what Guru Ravidass and all later Gurus wanted ie a casteless society. Indian society needs to be rebuild on the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. Nobody likes oppression and it should not be tolerated. We should all stand-up to oppression.

I do not understand your point. Yes fair enough i accept that by marrying out of caste she is obviously not castist. However she has been extremely rude in the way in which she has pointed out that our community talk about caste a lot. I am merely pointing out the reasons why. Somebody that makes uneducated and rude comments, as she clearly did, is ignorant. In her defense you write that she must have experienced hardship at the hands of her ‘jatt’ family, when in her comment above she clearly states that her jatt family never mention caste, so it must have been a non issue at the time of her marriage. Unless of course she is lying and her jatt family did give her hard time which would make them the people that are letting the flame burn and the ones that need to ” get a fucking life” .To answer your question, yes of course i would marry off my daughters/ sisters into other castes/ faiths. In my family we already have people of various castes and faiths and we all respect one another. I do not harbour toxic sentiment, i was simply providing the lady with the context and background as to why caste is an important topic for our community. No sir, i am not stuck in the past, i was ready and willing to marry out of caste, but the girls family were unwilling. I do agree with the lady that we talk too much about caste on religious events, and would much rather listen to gurbani and keertan on such events, than the ramblings of several community leaders/ politicians on caste. But coming here and making rude remarks about her husbands community is not the right way to go about addressing the issue. From what i can see you have condemned many people on this feed for using inappropriate and vulger remarks, but you have decided to defend this lady simply because she married a chamar. Marrying a chamar does not mean that she is therefore permitted to post offensive remarks at the chamar community. You make out as if she should be rewarded for marrying a chamar! That we should give her a big thank you and pat on the back for marrying one of our community! We are not a charity case sir, not some poor african child that some rich celebrity can come along and adopt to make them feel better about themselves! Aside from that, i would like to once again agree with the lady in condemning this feed ( as i did earlier) as it is promoting the caste system. I also very much agree with your closing remarks.

The Chamars community are also a martial race and its members are the citizen of India. You can check this from Mahar Regiment, Sikh Light Infentary and Chamar Regiment. We were in the front line as and when the the nation was in trouble. The people from my community may be poor but you will find them honest. We never took any action against India because we love over country and we are original resident of India. If you are educated person plz read Indian history. If you think yourself superior then remember God has made us equial and Indian Constitution also provide equial fundamental rights to all its nationals. Let the nation developed. Well it all depends on how people see themselves as. 1. Those chamars who have taken amrit and been baptised are khalsa sikhs. They may call themselves as Ramdassia/Ravidassia sikhs.Those ravidassia chamars who accept the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib as their Holy book and also accept Guru Ravidass as their Patron Saint and also show reverence to the 10 Gurus and the other satgurus ie Bhagats mentioned in the Guru Granth Sahib can also be to be seen Ravidassia sikhs. 3. There are those chamars who have broken away from the above mainfold of Ravidassia Sikhs or those who were never sikhs in the first place and have formed their own religion and are followers of ‘Dera ballan’ and have their own religious book called the ‘Amrit Bani’ – they call themselves neither sikhs nor hindus and yet call themselves as Ravidassias. This website is propagating these Ravidassias. 4 Then there are those chamars who have no idea who they are but by default will probably call themselves as hindus even though they may bow unto the Guru Granth Sahib and conduct births, marraiges and deaths though the Granth Sahib. 5 Finally there are those who worship some hindu deity and will be call themselves as hindus.
